FIFTEEN

“I think my folks like you,” Emily said, as she and Titus walked along her family’s pond after supper.

“Even though I beat your dat at checkers?” He lifted a brow.

“He probably let you win.” She smiled.

He stopped walking and stared at her. “What?”

“He does it all the time, especially with the kinskinner. He’s actually quite gut. So much so that no one wanted to play him anymore.” She shrugged. “I think he figures that he’d rather have an opponent and let them win, than to not play at all. No one wants to lose all the time.”

“But your dat does?”

“I think just knowing that he can win is enough.”

“I see.” He reached for her hand, intertwining their fingers. His gaze went to the water gently lapping at the edge of the pond. “This is nice.”

“Is there a pond on your property?”

“Nee. Too dangerous for the kinner. Ty’s too curious for his own gut.” Titus shook his head. “I can’t imagine losing another…” His words trailed off.

Emily’s chin quivered. She’d always been overly sensitive to other people’s pain. “I’m sorry. About your fraa.”

“It was over two years ago. I should have moved past this.” He shoved a tear away.

She lightly touched his forearm. “I don’t know if a person can ever get past a loss of that magnitude. She was a big part of your life. Part of who you are—who your kinner are.”

“You’re right.” He placed his hand over hers, then turned to face her. “But I need to move on. I want to move on. With you.”

“What can I do to help you?” She reached up and touched his cheek, her eyes searching his.

“You’re doing it.” He dipped his head and met her lips with his, while a warm breeze danced around them.

His kisses tasted of coffee and peppermint, making her think of Christmastime and everything good and wonderful and right.

The unexpected surprise of being invited to stay for supper at the Miller home had been more than Titus had hoped for. Even now, two days later, he could taste the delicious beef stew Emily’s mamm had made. And he’d probably relived his and Emily’s special moments by the pond a thousand times. Especially the kisses.

Excitement surged in his gut as he prepared for their date tonight. He’d dropped the kinner off at his folks’ place. He’d gone into town to fetch the items he needed to make tonight memorable. He’d donned his for gut clothes and a dab of cologne he hadn’t worn in eons. Everything was set to create a perfect romantic evening.

When he approached Emily’s driveway, his horse already knew to turn in. He’d been here nearly half a dozen times within the last week. It was beginning to feel quite familiar.

Emily’s father lifted a hand in the air when he spotted Titus driving down the lane, mirth sparkling in his mien. Titus liked Emily’s family, although being around her sisters felt a little awkward.

Emily stepped out of the house before he’d finished the journey, so he decided not to tether his horse.
